The ATM company shut down. The store didn’t.
Bitcoin Depot — the largest Bitcoin ATM operator in the US — filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2026, and thousands of kiosks nationwide have gone dark. If your local machine is offline, there is a staffed counter waiting: two California stores, locked market rates, and cash trades up to $50,000 a day.
What happened to Bitcoin Depot?
Bitcoin Depot operated more than 9,000 Bitcoin ATMs — the most of any US company — before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2026. It was not alone: the number of Bitcoin ATMs in the US fell from roughly 30,600 to about 20,200 in the first half of 2026 as operators pulled machines. In California, AB 39 now caps every surviving kiosk at $1,000 per customer per day and limits the fees kiosks can charge.
The demand for buying Bitcoin with cash did not disappear — the machines did. The Bitcoin Store is not affiliated with Bitcoin Depot; we are a FinCEN-registered money services business with staffed storefronts in San Jose and Stockton, where the daily walk-in limit is $50,000 in cash and every rate is quoted and locked by a person, not printed by a machine.
Used a Bitcoin Depot machine before? Here’s the good news
Coins already in your wallet are safe. Bitcoin you bought at any kiosk was delivered to your own wallet — it does not depend on the operator staying in business. What changes is where you buy and sell next. At a staffed counter you get the same cash-in, coins-out trade, minus the 8–20%+ kiosk markup, with a receipt from a registered business and a team that walks you through anything you are unsure about.
Kiosk vs. counter
A California kiosk today: $1,000 daily cap, 8–20%+ markup, no one to call. Our counter: up to $50,000 a day in cash, a locked market rate you approve before paying, ID-verified trades, free wallet setup for first-timers, and a bank-wire desk for six-figure settlements.
